I can't stand Phillipa Gregory 's work - and she appears on TV as a 'historian' and gives her views as if they are the truth., Horribly, a guide at a castle told me she knows 'the truth' about Margaret Beaufort - needless to say, he got the history lesson of his life! I was so tempted to start a drinking game, but I suspect I'd have been under the table halfway through and that says something; I can take several drams of cask strength Whisky without getting tipsy. ;-) Donizetti's opera version of Anna Bolena has fewer historical mistakes. I just don't get why an 'academic'' perpetuates this myth.

Doherty seems to think Isabella's beauty can change a man's sexuality - yeah, right........so boring!Anerjehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16305237339979790391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933105074141988999.post-25536819410890158492015-05-15T01:36:32.185-07:002015-05-15T01:36:32.185-07:00Great post, Anerje. I am so sick of Doherty's ...Great post, Anerje. I am so sick of Doherty's horribly inaccurate non-fiction and author's notes in his equally inaccurate novels, which are full of countless silly, sloppy errors. He keeps repeating that Isabella was buried next to Mortimer, though he knows perfectly well it's not true, and in his Death of a King he changes Edward III's date of birth by eight months to accommodate his invention that Mortimer was Edward's real father - and doesn't acknowledge this change in his author's note.

I am also well and truly beyond sick of his endless descriptions of Isabella's great beauty and desirability, put in the mouth of a woman (Mathilde) who's supposedly in love with a man but who just can't stop harping on all the time about Isabella's luscious beautiful body and lips and so on. He's obviously obsessed with her and her appearance. I feel like screaming 'Yes, she's gorgeous and sexy! I GET IT!!!!'

The worrying thing is that Doherty has a doctorate from Oxford about Isabella and thus has a lot of credibility he really doesn't deserve, given that a) he doesn't know which of Isabella's brothers was king of France in 1320, b) thinks Edward II's sister Elizabeth was married to a man who died in 1061, and c) thinks that Margaret de Clare was called 'Joan of Gloucester' (Isabella and the Strange Death of Edward II, pp. 13-14, 50, 64) *rolls eyes*

http://edwardthesecond.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/book-review-isabella-and-strange-death.htmlKathryn Warnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00397714441908100576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933105074141988999.post-52937317119206681552015-05-13T12:15:27.722-07:002015-05-13T12:15:27.722-07:00Hi Kasia. It's been so difficult LOL! But a so-called historian using that position to pass off a work of fiction as fact is too annoying for words! It falls at the first hurdle, so to speak, for me - if Edward was 'fed-up' of Piers,(as if!) why call him back and risk civil war? ???? Too silly for words!Anerjehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16305237339979790391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933105074141988999.post-2988407315411918122015-05-13T00:44:25.791-07:002015-05-13T00:44:25.791-07:00Also, it seems that the author forgot to look at E...Also, it seems that the author forgot to look at Edward's actions preceding and following Piers's death. One has to agree that the misplacing of Isabella's resting place is a blatant one and also I would call it basic. Odd, when we take into account it was made by sb for who admires the queen so much. Perhaps I am a little bit "choosy", but one blatant mistake is enough to make me both cautious and distrastful :-) Katarzyna Ogrodnik-Fujcikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10415905019122111675noreply@blogger.com
