A New/Old Piers book

Browsing on Amazon last week, I came across a re-issue of 'Piers Gaveston; A Chapter of Early Constitutional History' by Walter Phelps Dodge. The book was originally published in 1899, and has been available on-line for some time. It was re-issued in December 2009. Naturally, I ordered it, as it was reasonably priced, and much easier to read than on-line. Sadly, it doesn't have the pictures included. The on-line version (which is available for download), has a picture of the tomb of Piers Gaveston's father. I've never read the full text, so am looking forward to reading it.

Would love to hear what you think of this one, Anerje! I have it too, a PDF version, but still haven't read it (horrors!!) The problem is that I really don't like reading books on the computer screen, and it's miles too long to print out, so I may have to order a hard copy - I'd actually missed the fact that it was re-issued lately, so thanks for the info!

I know what you mean about reading books 'on-line', that's why I ordered it. You can bet I will give a review once I've read it!

It's OK for its time. But Jeffrey Hamilton's and Pierre Chaplais's biographies are much more thorough.

I did use Dodge quite a bit, though, when I was researching Piers' paternity for an article I co-wrote on Amie de Gaveston, as it contains some original documents and sources that Hamilton and Chaplais certainly looked at, but never transcribed.

I'll be interested to read your review of it!

Anerje, I have a great picture of the effigy of Piers' father that I took when I was at Winchester Cathedral.

If you send me your email address, I'll send it to you as an attachment.

You can reach me at royaldescent@hotmail.com

Cheers, ----Brad

Thanks Brad - I've just sent you an e-mail! I'd love to see the picture. And if possible, could you post the link to your article on Amie de Gaveston?
I agree about the bios by Chaplais and Hamilton - both are well researched and well-written.

I'm half-way through the Dodge book, and yes, it is of its time. I'll write a full review in the next week or so.
